Prolotherapy, or regenerative injection therapy, is a procedure that stimulates the body’s natural healing response to strengthen ligaments and tendons due sprains, tears or other injuries. The procedure is intended to help stabilize joints by strengthening the joint’s primary support structures.
The procedure utilizes a direct injections of a solution designed to slightly irritate the area in need of healing. The natural inflammatory response assists in the regeneration of stretched or lax ligament or tendon fibers, with a subsequent tightening of the structures around the joint. Additional treatments may continue to strengthen these tissues.
For most patients, the injections are not particularly painful, but typically produce some mild localized swelling and stiffness. This is exactly what it is intended to do and is a sign of the body taking action on the area. This discomfort period usually lasts a day or so and passes quickly. Prolotherapy may be used by itself, or to help strengthen unstable joints prior to more advanced procedures, such as a same-day stem cell procedure.
